Emulating the All-American Style of Lauren Hutton

A collage of Lauren Hutton and Petite Over 40, both in a red leather trench coat and converse sneakers.

Lauren Hutton turned 74 last year. Throughout her career, she has been known for her “All-American Style.” It’s timeless and chic and surprisingly simple. She perfectly balances feminine polish with masculine casual. She is one of my style gurus.

That’s why, this week, I’m emulating one of her looks from from ELLE France.

This article came out in 2013. I still think her look rocks and it will forever. She owns it. Nicholas Moore was the photographer for her shoot. It was just lil ol’ me for mine. 🙂

The Elements of This All-American Style

American style has so many definitions. Lauren Hutton defines it with simple but impactful pieces. Just three items make up her look in ELLE France: a red leather trench coat, a pair of jeans, and camouflaged Converse sneakers.

I think I can handle that.

Thanks to Suzanne Carillo, I own a vintage red leather trench coat from the 1970s. She discovered it in one of her thrifting hunts and I snatched it up from her Etsy store before she even listed it! (It pays to know the boss of the company.)

I styled this coat a different way last year when I had pink hair!
Check it out here.

Vintage red leather trench coat makes me feel like a Charlie's angel with pink hair.

I have Mel from Bag and a Beret to thank for the patchwork knee-high Converse sneakers. She found them in the $5 pile at My Sister’s Closet in Vancouver.

You may recall seeing these sneakers recently in my Jumpsuit Mix Tape post just a couple of weeks ago.

Embroidered satin bomber jacket, black jumpsuit, patchwork converse sneakers.

I love those shoes!

As it turns out, this All-American outfit was styled by Canadians. Suzanne is from Toronto and Mel is from Vancouver. And the Paige Verdugo skinny jeans were purchased at Danna Nicole in Stratford, Ontario a couple of years ago.

You’d think I had a thing for Canada.
(I do.)

When I unbutton the coat, you can see the white Eileen Fisher tank top underneath. I’ve had it for so many years I can’t remember where I bought it.

Who knows? Maybe I got that in Canada too!

Lauren Hutton’s All-American (All-Canadian?) style continues to be a source of inspiration for my own style. She may very well become a fixture on my blog.

Oh my goodness Sherry!!! Lauren Hutton would be so honored and you’re bringing a HUGE smile to my face.
I want to go to My Sister’s Closet and find treasures like these sneakers.
Lauren Hutton is a classic icon and woman of notable beauty and style. So are you my friend Sherry!

    1. Thank you, Jude!! You would love My Sister’s Closet. Mel finds so many treasures there. She found these sneakers before I even noticed their existence. When they didn’t fit her, I tried them on and, voila! It was a Cinderella moment. 🙂

      I hope you are well.

      Hugs,
      Sherry

  6. Fantastic coat!

    1. Thank you, Nancy!

  7. Nobody styles American quite like Canadians. Hahaha! But there’s no denying, this is pure Sherry. Love it! I’ve been out of the loop too long – I missed your Converse the first time around. Doh! Aren’t they excellent?! Your take on Lauren Hutton is right on, even better. The long leather coat adds a fun Matrix vibe. Excellent.

    1. Thank you, Mel! Based on the number of bloggers and Etsy shop owners from Canada I follow, I think you’re right!

That coat definitely has a Matrix vibe to it. I’m almost bummed to see the temperatures rising outside because, soon, I won’t be able to wear it!

  8. You slayed this look. I like your version more than Lauren’s. You add some pizzaz with those amazing high top lace up sneakers.

I’m so happy I didn’t have to convince you to buy that red leather coat. It’s stunning.

    1. I’m so glad you thought of me when you found that coat, Suzanne! It’s a showpiece, for sure! I might even hope for cold weather in June so I can bring it to Vancouver! 🙂 ha ha!
