Gettin’ Jiggy in a Raspberry Beret

Petite Over 40, Sherry Dryja, in a homemade corduroy bib dress with a thrifted striped sweater, pink beret by Seattle designer, La Macon by Shari Noble, blue tights and knee-high Converse sneakers thrifted in Vancouver.

You would think, given my weekend honoring Prince at the Museum of Pop Culture, and then again at a laser light show featuring his music, that I would use this opportunity to talk about my newest Sassafras purchase in reference to his song Raspberry Beret. But no. My muse does not follow logic. She wants what she wants and she wants Will Smith’s “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It.”

It’s not usually my habit to sample songs without a Creative Use License for my own use (although, I must admit, it would make my life a whole heckuva lot easier). But there are times when the song is so strong in my mind I have to do something with it, hence the video above.

You’ve already seen both the beret and the dress in the video, but let’s slow everything down so you can get a better peek.

The Dress

I made the dress myself from a McCall’s pattern meant for super newbie sewists like myself. When I first posted about it, I wasn’t too keen about how it felt on my body. My head was stuck in the “bib dress with Breton top” look, partly because I like the look and partly because everywhere I looked, there was a corduroy bib dress paired with a Breton top. My muse was not amused, though. She wanted something different and she wouldn’t let me rest until I listened to her demands.

How about pastel stripes, I asked? Paired with a pink beret, a velvet pink choker, and knee-high Converse sneakers?

Yes, she said. That’ll do just fine.

So, that’s what I did. And I felt more me.

Which led to “Gettin Jiggy Wit It” in my living room.

The Beret

Ms. Raspberry, as I have come to call my sweet beret, was handmade by local Seattle designer, Shari Noble of Maison La Macón. And, of course, where else would I find such a sassy hat, but at Sassafras, my favorite Seattle boutique?

Notice it’s actually two tones of raspberry?

The lining’s got a thing or two to add to this fun conversation with its polkadot cuteness.

If that weren’t enough, I must mention that Shari usually works in leather but she created a handful of vegetarian hats and accessories for those of us trying our best to make cruelty-free decisions about our apparel, and I thank her for that.

The Shoes – Oldies but Goodies

The shoes have been featured in other outfits I’ve posted, but I can’t help pull them on when I want something just a little different. Whenever I wear them I feel almostcool enough to be a background dancer for a young Will Smith.

Mel of Bag and a Beret found these when we were visiting My Sister’s Closet in Vancouver together a couple of years ago. They didn’t fit her but they did fit me! And they were only $5!!! Thanks, Mel!

The Pin

I can’t forget the pin on the bib pocket. It’s a gift from one of my favorite Seattle artists, Vikram Madan. I have several of his paintings and they all touch that part of my soul where my muse runs and plays with abandon.

Other Outfit Details

Because so many of you are detail-oriented and incredibly observant, you probably noticed in the video that I changed things up a bit with this outfit. The beret and dress stayed the same but the top and shoes changed and I added a jacket. Don’t ask me why I did this. You’ll have to talk to my muse.

Below is a list of everything I’ve paired up with this bib dress and beret. Now that I’ve let my muse free to play with it a little, I think the dress has become a lot more “me.”

Your muse is a freaking goddess! Love the dancing, the shout out to the Fresh Prince, and your knee-high sneakers. Can it be I will see you IRL in 3 days??? xox

    1. I’m so excited to see you, Patti!!

  4. Look at you, gettin’ jiggy in your living room! I did love the bib dress when you first showed it here, but I love it even more styled with that short sleeved stripy jumper and the raspberry beret. Oh, that polka dot lining truly makes me heart sing! Those shoes/boots are the epitome of coolness. Coolness combined with cuteness! xxx

    1. Thank you, Ann! You mentioned the polkadot lining of the hat. Those are the kinds of details Shari always sews into her items–a key reason I love her work! One of these days I’ll get around to sharing a dress she made that I love. From the fabric to the cut to the little half-peplum on the waist, she’s created a vintage-y feel I know you’d approve of! You’re inspiring me to do another blog post now! 😀💕

  5. Ha! I love that you are dancing around in your living room alone : P . I do that all the time. I think when your outfit makes you want to dance you know you’ve really outdone yourself.

Both outfits suit you to a tee. That floral coat is a hit and so are those oh-so-cool sneakers/boots.

Too fun that Mike made a brief appearance in the video too ; P

    1. Ha ha ha! I hadn’t thought about how it must seem, me dancing alone in my living room, until you mentioned it. Now I’m literally laughing out loud!

The video of Mike is older but I had to share it because it fit so well! Ha ha! He hasn’t seen it yet. I’m curious what he’s going to think!

See you soon, my friend!!! 💕

  6. Sherry, you once again have shown us that you are a creative, fun and beautiful soul. Loved the video!! And that dress is so cute. I would definitely wear that. Love your style! – Amy

  7. OH…so freakin’ cute Sherry! The fit on your pinafore is perfect! And you’ve styled it with so much personality. Love the beret too….the lining makes it extra special.

Okay…I missed your first post on your dress…I’m off to check it out now.

    1. Thank you, Sue! I am planning on wearing this on Friday so you can see it in person! ❤️

Well, the pattern for this darling jumper may have claimed to be easy but you added complexity by choosing a ” napped” fabric like corduroy. HOWEVER, it looks like you triumphed on the sewing as well as the styling of this new addition to your wardrobe!
I have loved hightop sneakers my entire life. This pair from Vancouver are spectacular!! I’ve also been an enduring fan of corduroy! I tossed on a pair of boot leg, red cords. from my personal vintage closet stash, just today!!
Berets have also been a lifelong hat choice and although I have red, I don’t have raspberry!!
You are just adorable dancing and groovin’ in your living room!!
This was a post worth waiting for!!!

    1. Thank you, Jude! I loved getting to see some of your berets in photos you sent me. Now I’m dying to see the bootleg cords you mentioned! Like you, corduroy is one of my favorite fabrics. I can’t get enough of it! Or hats. Or sneakers. We are too cute to live! Ha ha ha!

  9. Super fun! And you found a photo of Will in bib overalls!

    1. Ha ha! YES! I was stoked when I found that photo of Will. We were twins! 🙂
